Sustainability

The word sustainability is often heard, but how does it actually apply to design? As designers of buildings, I feel we are responsible for all that goes into the structures we help create…how these things impact the earth is one of the guiding principles of my work. The road from here to sustainability is a distance of small steps…

…Use of local craftsmen and resources, which adds to the health of the local economy and reduces the fuels consumed in shipping things from afar.

…Use of natural, non-toxic materials in construction methods and finishes, creating 'clean air' environments.

…Research into materials that are 'true green'…many products do not actually live up to their 'sustainable' labels in their manufacturing processes.

…Use of reclaimed and sustainably grown materials woven into the aesthetic of my work…woods, textiles, metals, antiques.

…Reduction of energy consumption in the promotion of smaller homes, efficient systems, and alternative energy sources…solar, wind, biofuels.

…Design of mindful, timeless solutions that can last a lifetime in a home…and when it is time to be replaced, recycled.
